Jadzia Dax is a central character in the science fiction television series Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, portrayed by actor Terry Farrell. This Trill, a species of slug-like beings, has lived multiple lives in different human hosts of both genders, and currently inhabits a female body. A unique aspect of Trill biology is the voluntary symbiosis with a long-lived entity. Once joined, the Trill and symbiont become biologically interdependent.¹

As the Chief Science Officer on Deep Space Nine, Dax brings a wealth of knowledge and experience, thanks to the accumulated memories of her past lives. Her intelligence, wit, and zest for life make her a beloved and complex character. Notably, her friendship with Commander Sisko and later romantic relationship with Worf add depth to her storyline.
Dax is a groundbreaking figure in the Star Trek universe and popular culture. Her existence as a being who is inherently neither male nor female, coupled with her open bisexuality in her current female form, challenges traditional notions of gender and sexuality. While the Star Trek franchise has always been a champion of human rights, addressing issues like racism, cultural imperialism, ageism, and sexism, Dax seems to be Deep Space Nine’s focal point in challenging those who maintain that same-sex attractions are unnatural or ungodly.

While Jadzia’s non-binary nature is a significant aspect of her character, the constant use of gender-neutral pronouns would be misleading in her case. For this blog post, I refer to Jadzia as “she,” as this is her current form and she is consistently referred to with she/her pronouns throughout the television series.
Jadzia Dax’s character was revolutionary for television in the 1990s. Her portrayal helped to break down barriers and challenge gender stereotypes. She continues to be a significant figure for fans who appreciate her unique perspective and her role in pushing the boundaries of representation.¹
