Scientists warn the 'truth is under attack' and provide toolkit for spotting it

I'm always suspicious when a scientist claims to be an arbiter of truth. Sure, there is good and bad science, spin, and outright lies. We need to watch for that. However, science itself is always comprised of competing theories or if a particular theory is dominant, there is a strong possibility that a more popular theory will arise.

I don't say a "better" theory will arise because that is an unwarranted assumption. Even if a newer theory predicts better than an older one, the newer one may omit important details or considerations essential to a more comprehensive understanding.

This is especially obvious in psychiatry, which arguably tries to reduce the human being to a socio-biological machine with choices. It is also evident in cosmology, where various theories focus on the small or abstract not understanding what life and creation are all about in the first place.

The scientific method is one way to acquire knowledge but it is arrogant and foolish to assume it is the only way.
