At other blogs I've posted songs under the heading 4FunHits! and other titles. But these days I'm more mellow, listening to entire albums and reflecting on how they were affected by and influenced the times.
James Taylor is a fascinating artist. He hung out with the Beatles at Abbey Road Studios, as Paul McCartney and others recognized his talent. He battled drugs to the point of calling his father once in desperation.
Here's one of my favorite James Taylor songs. It wasn't a big hit in 1975 but the album did quite well in the USA, even better in Canada.
Thank God he had the sense to do that. Not all overwhelmed pop stars call for help, and some tragically end up dead.
Taylor had several hits after but this album speaks to me most (although I do like his 1988 release, Never Die Young).
This song in particular reached me as a kid and still gets me today.
I've been in the army
I worked on a farm
And all I've got to show is the muscle in my arm
And it don't look like
I'll ever stop my wandering
If that isn't great folk lyrics, I don't know what is!
