Sex, Science, and the Inner Life - Podcast

[Impromptu Intro...]

Welcome back to Earthpages.org, where ideas meet intuition — and where the boundary between science and spirit is always up for discussion. I'm your host, Mike Clark.

Today’s episode might surprise you. We're diving into one of the oldest and yet most elusive topics out there: sex — but not in the usual way. We're going to explore how sexuality relates to science, spirituality, and the mysterious terrain of the inner life.

Let’s begin with a simple question:

Is sex just about pleasure and reproduction, or is there more going on under the surface?

The materialists, of course, would say it’s all biology — hormones, neural circuits, evolutionary drives. And sure, that explains a lot. But what about the subjective experience of sex — the meanings, the symbolism, the soul-level connections we sometimes feel?

Some of us sense there’s more to it — that sex can be a window into something deeper.
An exchange not just of fluids and pheromones, but of energy, insight, and maybe even spirit.

Now, I'm not here to say it always is. Sometimes it's just fun. Sometimes it's a mess. And sometimes, as we know, it can be harmful or misused. But the point is — sometimes, it’s not. Sometimes, it feels like something else entirely — like stepping into another dimension.

This isn't just poetic talk. Throughout history, people have experienced sex as something mystical. Think of tantra, or even Christian mystics who spoke of divine union in erotic terms. Some thinkers argue that sexual experience, at its most intense, can disrupt the ordinary sense of self — leading to altered states, peak experiences, or moments of transcendence.

So why doesn’t mainstream science talk about this?

Well, partly because it’s tricky to study. You can’t exactly plug a soul into an fMRI scanner. But also because many modern disciplines — psychology, medicine, neuroscience — have been shaped by a mechanistic worldview that tends to leave out the spiritual.

But what if that worldview is too narrow?

What if there's something real going on during sex — something that connects body, mind, and spirit in ways we don’t yet fully understand?

That’s what fascinates me. Not because I have all the answers — I don’t — but because I think we need to ask better questions.

Here’s one more thought to leave you with:

If sex can open a door to something higher — or deeper — maybe it’s time we start seeing it not just as a personal act or a biological function, but as a potential spiritual path.
Not always. Not for everyone. But when the moment is right, and the connection is real — maybe something sacred peeks through.

For those on a dedicated spiritual path, sex isn’t just physical — it can have implications for spiritual work and even altruism.

In many religious and spiritual traditions, our inner lives are not isolated: spiritual presence can move between people, sometimes influenced by sexual behaviour or even by touchless sexual attraction. You might feel that other person inside you. And it's not just in your mind. :)

There's some reason you are connecting with that other person. For some, subtle sex at a distance is a devilish deception. Others see it as a stage along the journey to enlightenment or perfection. And yet others just see it as a nice part of life where you can be intimate without all the fuss and bother of physical sex.
