Psychologist Glen Milstein is proposing a new model called COPE (Community Outreach & Professional Engagement) to link mental health services with faith communities. The idea is simple: clergy offer spiritual and social support, while clinicians provide therapy and diagnosis—together they can do more than either can alone.
Milstein, soon to lead the APA’s Division on the Psychology of Religion, says the evidence for faith’s role in well-being is now too strong to ignore. Expect more cooperation between churches and mental health providers in the near future.
